Liverpool Top Ten Hotels
There was a time - and it wasn't too long ago - that good hotels in Liverpool were as rare as decent tourist-class ones in London but, now, thanks to a burst of development following the city's Capital of Culture designation, you can find a decent place to bed-down after a hard day's night (sorry). Here are ten - a couple from each price-band. Liverpool's yet to bag a five star hotel, unlike its neighbour, Manchester, which has two. But, frankly, that's not something Liverpool needs. It's still the UK's chief city-based tourist destination outside London - and tourists come for the calibre of the festivities outside the hotel, not the toiletries inside.

1.Hard Day's Night Hotel - Four Star
Address: Mathew Street, Liverpool
Early indications are that this Beatles-themed hotel, set to open in November 2007 in the Cavern Quarter won't be quite the car-crash it could have been. Rooms promise wi-fi and, of course, excellent music systems, while public areas will be suitably fab-four'ed up. It's within screaming distance of the Cavern, too. 2.Marriott Liverpool South - Four Star
Address: John Lennon Airport, Liverpool
The old Speke Airport control tower and terminal buildings have been imaginatively restored to house this decent hotel - an airport hotel with soul? Whatever next! Best hotel rates at www.alpharooms.com
3.Hope Street Hotel - Boutique Four Star
Address: Hope Street, Liverpool
Situated in a pleasant, arty quarter just up Hardman Street, and opposite the Philharmonic, Hope Street hotel was the city's first boutique hotel and it got things just about perfect. 4.62 Castle Street - Boutique Four Star

5.Radission SAS - Four Star
Address: Old Hall Street, Liverpool
Swish new hotel next-door to the offices of the city rag, The Liverpool Echo. Stunning atrium, cosy White Bar drinking den and, for those with river views, you've the ebb and flow of the Mersey to lull you to sleep. It's a little out of town but worth the ten minute walk. Beware its restaurant, Filini - it's overrated. Best hotel rates at www.alpharooms.com
6.Malmaison City Centre - Four Star
Address: Princes Dock, Liverpool
This Gotham-like creation, by far the best-looking new development on Liverpool's blighted waterfront, offers good (if smallish) rooms, an incredibly purple bar and really rather super restaurant. It attracts Atomic-Kitten wannabees which, depending on your taste, is either reason to stay or reason to avoid. Best hotel rates at www.superbreak.com
7.Britannia Adelphi Hotel - Mid Range
Address: Renshaw Street, Liverpool
Once this mighty hotel was 'the' place to be seen in - now it's rather like one of those old ladies who wear a touch too much eye shadow and will willingly spend the evening with anyone, as long as they'll buy her a drink. Impressive public rooms, nonetheless. Service? What's that? Best hotel rates at www.expedia.co.uk
8.Thistle Hotel - Mid Range
Address: Chapel Street, Liverpool
Rising, funnel-like in-front of the dramatic new Unity development, the Thistle is a venerable hotel which has seen better days but still offers good sized rooms, a decent enough restaurant and good service. Rooms can be quiet and good value at the weekends. It's close to the Pier Head and Town Hall. Best hotel rates at www.alpharooms.com
9.Dolby Hotel - Budget
