1.Explore the Timanfaya National Park

Address: Yaiza, Lanzarote
These famous volcanic lava fields have starred in Planet of the Apes, Enemy Mines, and 2001 Space Odyssey. The central attraction is the volcano known as Fire Mountain which is still live but lies dormant and draws a vast number of visitors. The best way to see the volcanic is by organised excursion because cars aren’t allowed to drive along the Route of the Volcanoes to see the eerie landscape of jagged, mangled rock. At the summit the lingering volcanic heat remains hot which enables the park wardens to perform a few party tricks to wow the crowds. They pour water down a well, which instantly turns into a geyser. Even pebbles dug up from the ground here are too hot to handle.

Haria, or “village of a thousand palm trees” as it is known locally, is characterized by its beautiful landscape. The village’s speciality is a liqueur made from dates and honey. It’s said to be an aphrodisiac and is served with cinnamon and cream or condensed milk. You can’t get it anywhere else, so if you like it, buy some.

3.Sample some wine in the La Geria Region

Address: Uza to Mozaga, Lanzarote
For a spot of wine tasting head to the vineyards of La Geria which have been created out of individual hollows carved out of lava. Wine can be tasted in the bodegas (wine cellars) - the oldest of which - Bodega El Grifo has a beautiful wine museum.

A volcano that is reputed to be 10,000 years old.  Eroded over the years, there is a beautiful green lagoon at its base, and the red, black and yellow rock formations are stunning.

5.Explore the Jameos Del Agua Water Caves

Address: Near Arrieta, Lanzarote
A jameos is an underground volcanic tunnel with a partially collapsed roof. The famous Lanzarote artist Cesar Manrique started off with the bare rock here and created a thing of beauty, a masterpiece of art. Spiral wooden stairs twist down into the earth and there at the bottom is a dance floor and a restaurant overlooking an underground lake. Behind it is a large cave turned into a 500-seat auditorium for shows and concerts. On Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights Jameos del Agua becomes a spectacular nightclub.

Another creation of the artist Cesar Manrique. This former disused quarry is now an extraordinary formal garden with more than 1,400 varieties of cacti. Taking man’s relationship to nature as his inspiration he designed a towering green metal cactus at the entrance and inside created terraces of green cacti planted like bizarre artworks in black volcanic ash. You can stop off for a drink at the cool bar where wooden tables under sailcloth awnings offer a magnificent view of the entire garden.

8.Be inspired at Fundacion Cesar Manrique

Address: Tao de Tahiche, 5km north of Arrecife
Famous Lanzarote artist Manrique combines nature and art in his designs and nowhere illustrates this better that the Fundacion Cesar Manrique, the artist’s house. This original piece of architecture is stunning and made out of volcanic bubbles created by gases trapped in the lava flow. Steps lead down into five volcanic bubbles created during the 1730-6 eruption and each bubble has been made into a room with a distinctive colour scheme and furnishings. Before Manrique died in a road accident in 1992, he was forced to move from the house because it became a magnet to so many visitors fascinated by the amazing structure.

9.Discover the secret of Cueva de los Verdes (Greens’ Caves)

Address: near Arrieta, Lanzarote
These volcanic caves are the longest lava cave system in the world, which is enhanced by lighting and music on a guided tour. They are not green, as their name suggests, but named after the former owners known as Verde. But the caves hold a secret, which will make you gasp in amazement.

10.Try market day in Teguise

Basking in the middle of Lanzarote, the small town of Teguise offers an untouched Spanish atmosphere with quaint meandering streets and bustling squares. Be sure to visit on a Sunday when the weekly market transforms the town into a hive of activity.
