1.Couscous - Rolled Semolina Wheat

Like Morocco this is the national dish of Tunisia. It is made by rolling semolina wheat and is usually served with vegetables or meat. It can be eaten cold or warm.

This pastry parcel can have a variety of fillings including vegetables, minced lamb or beef. Once this is prepared it is coated in egg and deep fried in oil to create a crispy crunch.

3.Chakchouka – Ratatouille Style Dish

This spicy Tunisian vegetable and egg dish makes a tasty breakfast or light lunch.  It is often served with chick peas, tomatoes and peppers and a poached egg. 

4.Slata Mechouia – Vegetable Salad

A refreshing salad made up of tomatoes, green peppers and grilled onions. The flesh of the vegetables is pounded in a pestle and then seasoned with salt, pepper and coriander.

Much like minestrone soup, this traditional Tunisian soup is tomato based and usually contains chickpeas and spices. This soup is particularly popular in the month of Ramadam.

6.Tajine - Vegetable or Meat Stew

A hearty meal named after the clay pot – Tajine – in which it is cooked. Tajine stews are cooked slowly at a low temperature. Famous tajine dishes are Mqualli (Chicken), Kefta (Meatballs and Tomato) and Mrouzia (Lamb).

7.Bambalonis  - doughnuts

A light crispy Tunisian style dessert much like a doughnuts. If you’ve got a sweet tooth also try makroudh which is a traditional Tunisian sweet honey-cake. Baklava a honeyed pastry is another popular dessert.

8.Wine

Wine is popular in Tunisia with popular red wines including Vieux Magon, Chateau St Augustin and S’lian, while popular whites include Chateau St Augustin and Ugni Blanc.

Tunisia - Beef Stew9.Mloukhia - Beef or Lamb Stew

Named after the herb which is used – Mloukhia is a seasoned beef or lamb stew with bay leaves. Usually served with crusty French bread.

10.Fricassee - Sandwich

This traditional Tunisian sandwich which is stuffed full of various ingredients including tuna, eggs, vegetable and olive and then fried until it reaches a crispy texture. Often eaten as a snack or for lunch.
